The TEDxSalem Artist in Residence (AIR) program focuses on building relationships with local artists. The AIR program provides support for an artist to create an art installation that will help set the tone for our event, communicate the event theme and convey an ‘idea worth spreading.’
This is a unique opportunity for an artist to expose their work to a new audience and in a new, dynamic way. The Artist in Residence in encouraged to explore their practice and creativity as it relates to and connects with the TEDxSalem theme.
Working with the planning team during the months leading up to our event, the Artist in Residence will design and implement a large scale installation. TEDxSalem provides the Artist in Residence with support, assistance and a $1000 stipend to create their installation piece.
TEDxSalem collaborates with Salem Art Association as part of SAA’s Community Arts Education (CAE) Artist in Residence (AIR) Program in the renovated Art Annex in Bush Park. The selected artist may utilize the studio space for the creation of the installation, and will have access to the larger main space as the installation grows in size. SAA’s CAE AIR Program connects with our community through various opportunities such as artist talks, workshops, and other programming, which the TEDxSalem artist can participate in as part of SAA’s CAE Program.
The Artist in Residence is both a speaker and an adjunct member of the planning/production team. As a speaker, the artist is assigned a speaker liaison to assist with development of their talk. As a member of the planning team, the artist is assigned a liaison from the team.
Not all artists are experienced speakers so selected artists must be open to coaching and giving a TEDx talk, the live presentation of which is a professional quality video posted in the online collection of TEDx Talks from around the world. Not all artists are experienced with installation so selected artists must demonstrate they are ready to stretch into a new medium and how this will advance their studio practice and career.
Preference is given to artists with experience creating installations of this scale. The final artist is selected based on the quality of their work and how it best reflects the TEDx mission of “ideas worth spreading.”
The Artist in Residence will be interviewed and a blog/story will be posted to the TEDxSalem website. Additionally, press releases will be sent to area media outlets promoting the collaboration.
After the event, the artist is encouraged to take their work designed for TEDxSalem out into the community for display in public areas such as universities, airports, libraries, etc. TEDxSalem will assist the artist in making connections in furtherance of this goal.
The TEDxSalem AIR program is supported in part by:
TEDxSalem IV Artist-in-Residence
The 2017 TEDxSalem Artist-in-Residence was Kathryn Cellerini Moore.
TEDxSalem III Artist-in-Residence

The Artist in Residence program is a TEDx Incubator Project that was started by TEDxMtHood (formerly TEDxConcordiaUPortland), which was the first large-scale event to have an Artist in Residence program where local artists work in conjunction with the main event. TEDxSalem is one of the first events to launch an Artist in Residence program under the mentorship of TEDxMtHood.
